RALEIGH, N.C.--Myers Bigel Sibley & Sajovec, P.A. (Myers Bigel), the largest independent patent law firm in the Carolinas, has achieved a prestigious Tier 1 designation in the 2013 "Best Law Firms" rankings from U.S. News and Best Lawyers which were recently announced on November 1st.

Additionally, D. Randal Ayers has been named Lawyer of the Year, while seven of his peers garnered "Best Lawyers" awards.

"The talent and dedication of the registered patent attorneys in each of our practice groups, including biotechnology, chemistry, electronics and computing, litigation, mechanical, trademark, and university, is ultimately what leads to national recognition within the legal industry," Managing Partner Jim Cannon said.

Ayers, who was named Best Lawyers' 2013 Raleigh Litigation Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year, works in Myers Bigel's Electronics/Computer and Litigation practice groups. His extensive experience includes patent prosecution and litigation in electrical engineering technologies, including Markman hearings, trials, and appeals, as well as many other forms of intellectual property litigation. Ayers received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia, his Masters Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from George Mason University, and his J.D. from the University of Virginia.

Myers Bigel attorneys Grant Scott, Electronics/Computer; Julie H. Richardson, Mechanical; F. Michael Sajovec, Chemical; and David B. Beatty, Mechanical were named as "Best Lawyers" for the first time. Repeat winners include Ayers; Mitchell S. Bigel, Electronics/Computer; Kenneth D. Sibley, Biotechnology, Chemical, and Mechanical; and Jim Cannon, Mechanical, Chemical, and Biotechnology.

The firm's Tier 1 ranking was determined through an overall evaluation derived from a combination of client feedback, the high regard that lawyers in other firms in the same practice area have for the firm, and information provided to U.S. News and Best Lawyers. The rankings provide a comprehensive view of the U.S. legal profession that is unprecedented both in the range of firms represented and in the range of qualitative and quantitative data used to develop the rankings.

According to U.S. News and Best Lawyers, achieving a high ranking is a special distinction that signals a unique combination of excellence and breadth of expertise. Presented in tiers, the rankings showcase more than 10,000 law firms ranked nationally or by metropolitan region. The national first-tier rankings will be featured in the U.S. News & World Report Money issue, on newsstands November 20, 2012.

"Myers Bigel provides expertise in all intellectual property areas, trademark and copyrights, as well as patents," Cannon said, adding, "We are becoming well-known throughout the country for having attorneys well-versed in prosecution and litigation to enforce or defend patents, trademarks, and copyrights in the face of increasing challenges brought on by continuing developments in the Internet and social media, healthcare, life sciences and technology."

Operating out of the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina, Myers Bigel represents corporate and university clients located in the Carolinas, throughout the Southeast, across the United States, and in Europe and Asia. For more information, visit www.myersbigel.com.
